Brake pads are one of the most frequently replaced consumable items on any car. Understanding how long they typically last, what the warning signs of wear are, and what different brake pad materials offer helps you budget for replacements and recognise when your brakes need attention.
How Long Do Brake Pads Last?
Average brake pad lifespan in the UK:
- Normal driving: 30,000 to 50,000 miles
- Heavy urban driving: 15,000 to 30,000 miles
- Motorway-heavy driving: 40,000 to 70,000 miles
- Performance/aggressive driving: 10,000 to 20,000 miles
The rear brake pads typically last significantly longer than the front pads — often 2-3 times as long — because most braking is done by the front brakes.
Types of Brake Pad Materials
Organic Brake Pads
Made from fibres — including Kevlar — bound in resin. Quiet and inexpensive, organic pads are standard on many family cars. They wear faster than other types and produce more dust.
Semi-Metallic Brake Pads
Contain between 30 and 65 percent metal — typically steel or copper — mixed with the friction material. More durable and fade-resistant than organic pads, semi-metallic pads provide better braking performance but are noisier and harder on brake discs.
Ceramic Brake Pads
Use ceramic fibres as the friction material. Quieter than semi-metallic, producing less dust and lasting longer. More expensive. Standard on many modern premium cars.
Signs Your Brake Pads Need Replacing
Wear Indicator Squeal
Most brake pads include a wear indicator — a small metal tab that contacts the brake disc when the pad is worn to its minimum thickness. This produces a high-pitched squeal when braking. If you hear this sound, book the car in for brake pad replacement — do not delay.
Grinding or Growling Noise
A grinding or growling noise — rather than a squeal — suggests the brake pad is completely worn and the metal backing plate is contacting the disc. This causes significant disc damage and requires immediate attention.
Reduced Brake Performance
As brake pads wear thin, the brake pedal travels further before braking force is applied and the car takes longer to stop. If the brakes feel less effective than before, check the pads.
Vibration Through the Brake Pedal
A vibration or pulsing through the brake pedal when braking may indicate warped brake discs, but can also occur with severely worn brake pads combined with disc wear.
