DVLA maintains a comprehensive database of all UK-registered vehicles, including their tax status, MOT status, and keeper details. Understanding what is on the database — and how to access it — helps you stay informed about your vehicle's status.

What the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Shows

The free GOV.UK vehicle enquiry service allows anyone to check any UK vehicle's tax and MOT status using just the registration number. The enquiry shows: whether the vehicle is currently taxed, the MOT expiry date, the vehicle's make and model, and the vehicle's CO2 emissions figure. The tax status is updated in real time — when you renew tax, it appears on the database within hours.

What Is Not on the DVLA Database

DVLA's vehicle register does not include: insurance status (this is on the Motor Insurance Database), vehicle mileage history (recorded at MOT centres but not centrally accessible), outstanding finance (check with HPI or similar), or vehicle damage or accident history. For these, you need specialist vehicle history services. The DVLA database is intentionally focused on tax and MOT compliance, not broader vehicle history.

The Motor Insurance Database

The Motor Insurance Database (MID) is maintained by the Motor Insurers' Bureau and tracks whether vehicles have valid insurance. DVLA cross-references the MID when vehicles are taxed — you cannot tax a vehicle without confirming insurance. ANPR cameras also cross-reference against the MID to identify uninsured vehicles. The MID is updated continuously as insurance policies are taken out and cancelled.

How ANPR Links to Tax

Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras read number plates and check them against both DVLA's tax database and the MID. If a vehicle is found on a public road without valid tax, the system flags it for enforcement action — a fixed penalty notice, clamping, or seizure. ANPR cameras can scan thousands of vehicles per hour on major roads, making tax evasion far more detectable than in the pre-digital era.

Your Personal DVLA Record

You can create a GOV.UK account to manage your vehicle's details online. Your account shows all vehicles registered in your name, their tax and MOT status, and allows you to renew tax, declare SORN, and update your address. Keeping your account current means you receive renewal reminders and can manage your vehicles from one place. Without an account, you rely on paper reminder letters and Post Office visits.

Data Sharing and Privacy

DVLA shares vehicle registration data with approved organisations — including insurance companies, law enforcement, and vehicle history services. This data sharing enables the systems that detect untaxed and uninsured vehicles. However, DVLA does not make your personal details freely available. Your data is protected under GDPR, and you can request a copy of the data DVLA holds about you through a subject access request.
