Mahindra has unveiled the Vision S, a sub-compact SUV positioned below the XUV3XO in its product lineup. The vehicle is designed to compete directly with the Tata Punch, Maruti Ignis, and the upcoming Tata Curvv's smaller sibling. With an expected ex-showroom price of ₹8 lakh, the Vision S targets first-time car buyers and urban families looking for an affordable yet capable SUV.

The Vision S is built on Mahindra's latest platform developed specifically for sub-compact vehicles, featuring independent rear suspension and a torsion beam front setup that balances ride comfort with cost efficiency. Mahindra's design team has given the Vision S a distinctive front fascia with the brand's signature double-barrel LED headlamps and a chunky front bumper that gives it an SUV presence despite its compact dimensions.

The Mahindra Vision S's ₹8 lakh ex-showroom price is strategically placed below the ₹10 lakh threshold that separates the 18% and 28% GST slabs for vehicles under 1200cc petrol engine capacity. This pricing decision represents a significant tax advantage: buyers save ₹80,000 in GST compared to if the vehicle were priced at ₹10 lakh or above. The vehicle's 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and compact dimensions support the sub-₹10 lakh pricing.

This tax saving translates directly to the buyer's advantage. A vehicle at ₹8 lakh with 18% GST costs ₹14.4 lakh on-road in states like Delhi. If the same vehicle were priced at ₹10 lakh with 28% GST, the on-road price would rise to ₹16.5 lakh, representing a ₹2.1 lakh difference. Mahindra's pricing strategy maximises the GST benefit for buyers while maintaining competitive positioning against the Tata Punch's ₹6 lakh-₹10.5 lakh range.

Mahindra has confirmed the Vision S will launch with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine producing 82bhp and 115Nm of torque, paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT automatic transmission. The petrol engine is specifically tuned for fuel efficiency, with the company claiming 18.5km per litre for the manual variant under standard test conditions.

A CNG variant is expected within six months of launch, addressing demand from commercial vehicle buyers and cost-conscious private buyers in regions like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Delhi where CNG infrastructure is well-developed. The CNG variant will command a premium of approximately ₹80,000 over the petrol version and is expected to offer fuel costs as low as ₹2.5 per kilometre.

Despite the sub-₹8 lakh price point, Mahindra has equipped the Vision S with features typically found in higher segments. The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system supports wireless smartphone connectivity and comes with built-in navigation. A semi-digital instrument cluster with a 3.5-inch MID display provides essential information to the driver. The Top variant includes a rearview camera, parking sensors, and a sunroof that is uncommon in the sub-compact segment.

Interior space is a key strength of the Vision S. The vehicle's 2,520mm wheelbase is 60mm longer than the Tata Punch's, translating to more rear legroom and a more comfortable seating position for adult passengers in the back. The 382-litre boot capacity is class-leading among sub-compact SUVs, easily accommodating two large suitcases for airport runs.

The Tata Punch and Mahindra Vision S represent the two most anticipated sub-compact SUVs of 2026. The Punch starts at ₹6 lakh with the base pure variant and extends to ₹10.5 lakh for the Creative+ AGS. The Vision S at ₹8 lakh sits in the middle, offering more standard features than the Punch's mid variants while undercutting the top-end Creative+ AGS.

Key advantages of the Vision S include Mahindra's proven SUV heritage, a longer wheelbase providing better interior space, and the GST tax benefit available at the ₹8 lakh price point. The Punch counters with Tata's wider service network in smaller towns, more colour options, and a larger existing owner community. Both vehicles are expected to receive high safety ratings when tested under the latest Bharat NCAP protocol.

The Mahindra Vision S is expected to be officially launched by August 2026, with pre-bookings likely opening from July 2026. Industry sources suggest Mahindra has already begun production trials at its Nashik plant, with initial volumes targeting 5,000 units per month. The company is reportedly in discussions with component suppliers to ensure component availability for this aggressive production target.

Mahindra dealerships across India are expected to receive Vision S allocations from launch, with no initial waiting period for standard variants. Dealers have been instructed to prioritise bookings for the Vision S Top variant, which Mahindra expects to account for 45% of total sales, followed by the Vision S Core variant at 35% and the AMT automatic at 20%.
